IRI Life Sciences


The IRI Graduate School does not offer funded positions but welcomes new members irrespective of their funding. Applications for membership in the IRI Graduate School are accepted throughout the year. Eligible applicants have to fulfil at least one of the following requirements:

  1. PhD thesis is done in an IRI group (core group or network group).
  2. PhD thesis is funded through a third-party-funded project which is done in collaboaration with at least one IRI group.
  3. PhD thesis is done in a group of Charité, MDC or HU Berlin, the research topic is closely related to the core research areas of IRI and an IRI member is willing to supervise the PhD student ("Promotionsgutachter"). This option is only available for 20% of the places of the Graduate School.


If you fulfil at least one of these requirements and want to apply for the IRI Graduate School, please submit the following documents to the office of the Graduate School:

  • Application form
  • Scientific CV
  • Copy of your MSc degree or equivalent
  • Summary of your previous research experience (max 1 page)
  • Summary of your planned PhD project (max 1 page)
  • Letter of motivation (max 0.5 pages)


By signing the application for the IRI Graduate School, PhD student and supervisor agree to fulfil the terms and regulations stated in the guidelines of the IRI Graduate School.


Please note that admission to the IRI Graduate School "Life Sciences" is not automatically connected with acceptance as a doctoral student at one of the Berlin universities!
