The tutorial will focus on results, where we used single-molecule fluorescence microscopy in conjunction with quantum dots and nanometer tracking to learn about the interaction of motor and non-motor proteins with microtubules. With respect to nanotechnological applications of biomolecular motor systems, our main emphasis is on the development of methods to control the nano-transport sytems by external signals in a spatio-temporal manner. Towards this end we investigate novel biotemplate-based nano-structuring techniques and fabricate smart composite surfaces, where active enzymes are embedded in stimuli-responsive polymer layers. Using kinesin driven microtubules we demonstrate the sensitive detection of molecular components and the optical mapping of nanometer-sized surface topographies.
